Adding variety to the afternoon was a 40-minute MG Challenge Handicap race for Equipe BCV8 and Equipe MG Cup runners, The opening laps featured an all V8 MGB trio lapping together at speed, Jordan Spencer heading the car shared by James and Jonathan Wheeler and that of Steve Wells, the trio seldom more than a second part.
The Wheeler car was the first to falter, pitting for several laps, Jordan Spencer finally getting a couple of seconds advantage over Wells with Luke Spencer now third, Wells the first to make his compulsory pitstop going in at the end of lap 15. The leader was in three laps later, a lap after the third placed car had pitted – the MG ZR190 shared by Stuart Emmett and Dan Ludlow that had superbly worked its way through from the back of the grid.
Spencer emerged behind Wells but closed in and was past into Becketts on lap 26, only for Wells to immediate fight back, then lose the lead again at Copse before coming to a halt at Luffield. Jordan Spencer rattled off the remaining laps to win from Luke Spencer, the Emmett and Ludlow ZR190 first of the MG Cup runners home in third, Oliver Wardle fourth in his MGB GT V8.
“That was such a good battle early on,” said Jordan Spencer. “I was expecting Steve Wells to just blast past me at any point but I somehow kept him at bay! Our transponder wasn’t working properly so I was looking to ease off and I had the pit wall telling me to push harder!”
The Handicap race produced a great result with Peter Burchill taking the honors in his ZS180 from Dale Reet and a superb third place for Archie Styant in their ZR170s. ” I am absolutely chuffed to bits” said Peter after the race. Peter’s win also earned him a cash prize of £250 from our partners at Drivenfi “This is a total but very welcome suprise” added Peter.
This weekend sees the Super Sprint event at Silverstone for Equipe Classic Racing, and they have laid on a 40 minute pit stop race for competitors of BCV8 and MG Cup. Competitors from both series competing in this handicap race with a cash prize thanks to DrivenFi. A real mix of cars thunderous V8’s vs nimble ZR’s.

It was a race a day for a strong Equipe MG cup entry of 24 cars, and on Saturday it took a restart to get the action finally underway. James Blake led them away in his invitation class ZR190, but at the end of the first lap he was side-by-side with Jake Fraser-Burns in his slick-shod ZR190, and Fraser-Burns was into the lead early in lap two and from then on opened a gap to the rest.
Blake chased hard but couldn’t catch the rapid leader so had to settle for second, Simon Byrne claiming third in his ZS. Fergus Campbell claimed fourth from Dan Ludlow, while the battle for sixth was a highlight, Cal Moore claiming the spot with Archie Styant and Stuart Emmett right with him at the end.
“That was a tense battle early on, I think the slick tyres just gave me the advantage over the race distance,” said race-winner Fraser-Burns. “It was a good fun race, you have to bring the slicks in and manage the gap.”
Sunday’s race followed a similar script at the front, Blake leading away only to lose out to Fraser-Burns on the second lap, Byrne once more running third. The lead trio spread out over the 20-minutes and opened a gap to the rest to finish in that order, but there was plenty going on further down the top ten.
For much of the middle part of the race Cal Moore’s ZR170 headed a five-car train of ZRs, his pursuers trading places lap by lap. Moore held onto fourth until the final lap, losing out to Andy Firth and Dan Ludlow to come home seventh, Styant right with him on the run to the flag.
“It was the same script as yesterday but that was a lot of fun,” said Fraser-Burns. “I just had to push hard and again the slicks were good, enjoyed that!”
